“Hey, Annie. Did you know that this is where people say they see Hitchhiking Annie?” Joe said as they rounded the corner onto Calvary Ave.
“Don’t be a jerk,” she said, punching him in the arm. “As soon as I turn eighteen, I’m leaving St. Louis for good, just so that people stop asking me if I was named after her.”
“Well, were you?”
Annie punched him again, but this time it was a bit less fervent. She wished she hadn’t let Joe choose the route for their morning run. Of course he would pick the only half-mile stretch of road she’d been taught to avoid. She ran her hand along the black, iron fence that surrounded Bellefontaine Cemetery. Across the street, an identical fence surrounded Calvary Cemetery, like two warring kingdoms setting up battlements to keep out the enemy.
